DONNE (WOMEN)
Experimental Documentary 53'
2009

Ivona, Julia, and Sonia are three Italian drag kings, three lesbians who perform masculinity on stage. Three black tailcoats, three glittering top hats, three white silk bow ties: they move in perfect synchrony, like figures emerging from an old musical. But what takes place is more than performance. It is a metamorphosis within a metamorphosis.

On stage, they are no longer read through the reductive codes of everyday identity. They become dandies: elegant, ironic, graceful, and precise. Masculinity here is not imitation, but construction, play, discipline, and freedom.

This experimental film is dedicated to Ivona, Julia, and Sonia, drag kings from Rome. It moves through their lives, their dreams, and their forbidden loves in a country where homosexuality has too often been forced into silence.

Donne is a joyful road movie, suspended between the rough black-and-white energy of Go Fish and the dreamlike, surreal atmosphere of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
