Concept

 

Ivona, Julia, and Sonia are three Italian drag-kings, three lesbians who perform on stage dressed like men. Three black tailcoats, three scintillating top hats, and three butterflies in white silk: the girls move in perfect synchrony, as in a beautiful musical film from the past.  When they perform they are not 'butches' anymore. When they are on stage they are three dandies full of grace, harmony, and nimbleness: a metamorphosis within a metamorphosis.

This experimental film is about Ivona, Julia, and Sonia, drag-kings from Rome. Is about their lives, their dreams, and their forbidden loves, in a country where homosexuality is still something you don't want to hear about. The Kings is a joyous road movie that recalls the rough black and white of Go Fish and the dream-like, surreal atmosphere of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
